Reward yourself with a multi-faceted career that is committed to assisting alcohol and drug abuse clients within your community. UCAN Academy of Health’s Addictions and Community Services Worker diploma caters to students who are interested in working in the professional health care sector. Graduates provide support in child, youth, and family social services, alcoholism, drug abuse, family violence and senior care. Career opportunities also exist in group homes, correctional and community mental health centres, and facilities for the physically and developmentally handicapped. Students are introduced to a wide range of core skills including writing, file management, assessment and treatment planning, counselling, and communications. Since addictions and community service workers are required to interact with clients and health care professionals on a daily basis these core skills are essential to the job. Additionally, students study the topics of psychology, pharmacology, addiction prevention and intervention, and other medical areas. Each student must complete a total of 320 hours over the course of 8 weeks in a mandatory clinical placement. UCAN Academy of Health provides a Career and Employment Strategies course that covers job searching and interviewing techniques, resume writing, and job counselling services to help students prepare for the work world.
Community Health CareA career in care giving is the perfect way to make a difference in your community and the lives of those who need specialized aide. The Community Health Care program at UCAN Academy of Health provides training and hands-on experience for work in settings like schools, community centres and care facilities. This 43-week intensive program prepares students for care positions in residencies, special needs facilities and more. UCAN Academy of Health’s highly trained instructors teach the skills needed to work with developmental disorders, special needs patients, behavioural disabilities, mental health disorders and geriatric patients. In addition, students learn how to plan recreational activities and programs, and run rehabilitation programs using art and music therapy. During the program, students gain experience in their field through three practica. Students spend three weeks in a non-clinical care facility, such as a school or community centre; three weeks in an intermediate care facility; and four weeks in an extended care facility, Graduates receive the following certifications: Community Health Care Worker Diploma; Long Term Geriatric Care Aid Certificate; Resident Care Attendant Diploma; Alzheimer’s Certificate; Mental Health Community Care Certificate; Basics of Medications Certificate; Standard First Aid Certificate; CPR “C” Certificate; Food Safe Level 1 Certificate and a WHMIS Certificate. At the end of this program, you will be fully prepared to enter the personally and professionally rewarding field of Community Health Care.
Dental Office AdministratorDiversify your skills and employment opportunities by training to become an administrator in both a medical and dental office setting. The Medical and Dental Office Administrator Program at UCAN Academy of Health offers an intensive program that will give you the best of both worlds. The 49-week program introduces students to the general responsibilities and specialized skills of an administrator in both facets of the health care industry. The Medical Office Assistant Diploma phase provides students with a background in medical terminology, pharmacology and medical office protocol. Learn medical office billing procedures, how to prioritize appointments and how to prepare and administer basic medical tests. During the Dental Office Administrator Diploma term, students learn about the history of dentistry and modern dental health practice and procedures. Dental billing software and other specialized administrative duties are also part of the curriculum. In addition to medical and dental office training, students will also obtain a Standard First Aid Corticated and CPR “C” Certificate. After the two five-week practica and job search training, you will be prepared to enter a variety of fields, including admitting clerk, medical or dental receptionist, claims administrator or even medical and dental product sales.
Medical and Dental Office AdministratorWork in the heart of the fast-paced health care industry as a Medical Office Assistant.
Medical Records AdministratorThe health care industry has volumes of medical records to store, maintain and protect and is in need of trained professionals. A medical records career balances medical knowledge and organizational and administrative skills. Our Medical Records Administrator Diploma program will provide you with the academic and practical training you need to become a guardian of personal medical records. This 33-week diploma program at UCAN Academy of Health trains students to oversee medical records in locations such as health ministries, insurance companies, hospitals and research centers. In addition to learning disease classifications and medical terminology, students learn the protocols for handling personal medical records. They become comfortable with the Health Information Management program and learn how to collect, file, process, monitor and protect health information. Additional courses examine confidentiality and review federal privacy legislation, which determines the guidelines of releasing personal information. Computer skills, office and front desk practices, and creating a sustainable workplace are other course topics. At the end of the program, you will participate in a 125-hour practicum in your field of study. This hands-on experience will prepare you for a career as a health records technician, medical records clerk or medical receptionist, among other jobs.

Rehabilitation Therapy AssistantIn the Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant program at CDI College, you will develop the knowledge, skills and values to assist rehabilitation therapists during treatments in a variety of health care and community settings.
As a Rehabilitation Therapy student, you will study anatomy, physiology, human development, movement and human disorders. You will also learn about clinical physiotherapy, gerontology, communications and rehabilitation processes. In addition you will have opportunity to learn about the occupation therapy and various techniques used for physical disabilities as well as the psychiatry and pediatrics fields.
As a graduate from the Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant program, you will be prepared to work in partnership with, and under the direction of, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and/or Recreational Therapists. You may find employment in a range of settings, including community health centers, clinics, private agencies, rehabilitation centers. Other settings that employ Rehabilitation Therapy Assistants include hospitals, long-term care facilities, fitness centers and residential care homes.
Resident Care AttendantElderly and special needs patients need fully trained aides to care for them on both a short- and long-term basis. UCAN Academy of Health offers an intensive 27-week Resident Care Attendant program that will provide you with the specialized training needed to work as an intermediate or extended caregiver. Potential career opportunities include long-term care aide, residential care attendant or home health care worker. During this program, students learn about chronic conditions, anatomy, physiology and medical terminology. Additional, courses focus on data collection and monitoring patient health. Additional courses teach students how to create a support network for the family members of a special needs patient. Through training and practica, students also gain the skills and experience to work with geriatric patients and those with chronic conditions, such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. The Resident Care Attendant program also provides “real world’ training with two clinical care supervised learning positions. You will spend three weeks working in intermediate care and four weeks in an extended care role. Graduates receive the following certifications: Resident Care Attendant Diploma, Long-Term Geriatric Care Aid, Certificate Food Safe Level 1 Certificate, Alzheimer’s Certificate, CPR “C” Certificate Standard First Aid Certificate and WHMIS Certificate.
